Sheriff Zaruba awarded the CALEA Egon Bittner Award
DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba was awarded with the Egon Bittner Award by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).The honor was presented at the November 2013 CALEA Conference in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
This award is presented to Chief Executive Officers who have commanded a CALEA accredited agency for 15 or more continuous years. It was created to recognize these leaders for their significant contributions to the public safety profession and to CALEA.
In 1987, Sheriff John Zaruba was named the agency’s first accreditation manager and started preparing for the agency’s first CALEA Law Enforcement Accreditation in July 1990. Over the years, Sheriff Zaruba and the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office have been awarded with several awards and achievements related to Accreditation. The Sheriff’s Office is one of only 51 agencies in the country to achieve the coveted “Triple Crown Award” that recognizes agencies that have achieved accreditation in every area, law enforcement, corrections, correctional health care and court security.
