Sheriff Zaruba Working to Keep Families Safe
Sheriff John Zaruba said today that his Sheriff’s Office S.P.E.A.R. (Sexual Predator Enforcement, Apprehension and Registration) Team, a multi-jurisdictional countywide team that takes a proactive approach to ensure that known sexual offenders are complying with the requirements of the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act, will spend Halloween watching child sex offenders to make sure they were complying with a Illinois Public Act that prohibits convicted sex offenders from handing out candy to children on Halloween.
The Sheriff’s Office will be conducting checks on 42 Child Sex Offenders who reside in unincorporated areas during trick or treat hours. Letters were sent to each registered sex offender advising them of the statute and the holiday restrictions.
S.P.E.A.R. investigations are ongoing for possible compliance violations all year. DuPage County has approximately 347 registered sex offenders.
